Diplo/Bonde Do Role/CSS at the Black Cat

Last night Tim, Michael, McCaffrey and I headed to the Black Cat for a concert I'd been looking forward to for months...

First up was Bonde Do Role, who...well, imagine a shout-out-loud punk band crossed with hyperactive two-year-olds, layered over some mad crazy dance beats. People were hitting the floor--hard--before the end of the first song. They do an incredible job of mixing together their distinctive Brazilian/Miami baile funk sounds with familiar American pop and rock, all while exuding a totally infectious, non-pretentious energy.

CSS is an mostly-girl group (their drummer is a guy) who fall more on the rock-n-roll end of the spectrum...I personally didn't dig it as much, but maybe that's more a matter of my taste than how good they are; the audience seemed to love it.

Then Diplo--it's odd having two bands (or semi-bands, Bonde Do Role is sort of undefinable) open for a DJ, but it ended up working great, because the time Diplo came on everyone was warmed up and ready to go. He kept the energy waaaaay up for hours...Michael describes it better than I could.

For his last few sets, Diplo brought Bonde do Role and CSS back on stage (plus a few peeps from the audience), which was apparently the sign for everyone to go crazy. By this point it was about a billion degrees, people were crowd-surfing, and the dance floor was littered with broken glass.

Home by 1:30am, asleep by 2, and my feet are still sore. Check the website to see if you're a tour stop, then buy some tickets already.
